Layered necklaces look effortless when the lengths are right. A few simple rules do most of the work.

Leave space between lengths

Two inches apart is a good starting point: a 16-inch chain with an 18-inch one, or 18 with 20. The pieces then sit in clear tiers instead of crowding each other.

Go from fine to bold

Put the finest chain closest to the neck and the boldest piece lowest, so each one is seen.

Mix one texture at a time

A cable chain, a pendant and a beaded strand work together; three bold chains compete.

Keep them apart

Necklaces made to be worn together on one clasp never tangle. If you layer separate ones, fasten them one at a time from the shortest and store them apart.
